Morocco Budget Flights: Top Tips from Experts

Have you been dreaming of a trip to Morocco for a long time? But can’t get over the sticker shock of airfares? Luckily, with more low-cost flights to Morocco becoming available, you have more options than ever. We think money is better spent on an amazing local experience than on inflated airfares, so we’ve put together our secrets for using budget airlines to Morocco.

Tip number 1

Look at the long list of budget airlines that fly to Morocco. Ryanair and Easyjet are your first choice for cheap flights to Morocco but there are others. Don’t be afraid to branch out and look for a good deal. Here is an extended list of budget airlines and the Moroccan cities they serve:

  • Air Arabia: Casablanca, Fez, Errachidia, Kharibga, Marrakech, Nador, Tanger
  • Air Berlin: Marrakech, Agadir
  • Easyjet: Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira
  • Germanwings: Casablanca, Marrakech, Nador-Tangier
  • Norwegian: Marrakech
  • Ryanair: Agadir, Essaouira, Fes, Marrakech, Nador, Oujda, Rabat, Tangier
  • Transavia: Agadir, Casablanca, Essaouira, Fez, Marrakech, Oujda
  • Vueling: Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Nador, Rabat, Tangier

You can often find cheap tickets to Europe and then combine them with a point-to-point ticket on a budget airline if you’re coming from somewhere other than Europe. Just remember that low-cost airlines often have strict baggage policies and tend to charge extra. Do your research. Compare all the options before making a decision.

Tip 2

Keep an eye on the calendar and strategically plan your holiday dates around the low season. Prices tend to spike during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and again during the summer school holidays in July and August. Consider travelling out of season for better deals. If your seasonal plans aren’t flexible, consider travelling on the day of the Christmas or New Year holiday itself, when fares may be lower and flights quieter.

Consider flying to Morocco during Ramadan for the ultimate cultural experience. There may be fewer restaurant options, but flights (and everything else!) tend to be cheaper. Plus, you’ll get to see for yourself the excitement and spirituality that descends on the country during this special time.

Tip 3

Rethink your final destination and take a ferry for the last leg of your trip. If time isn’t an issue, but money is, consider changing your final destination from Morocco to Spain. Then take a ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa to Ceuta or Tangier. For the adventurous traveller, the ferry can add an exciting step to your trip and make you feel like a real explorer. You can even get to see Gibraltar from most of the ferries. Detailed ferry information and timetables are available from FRS, Balearia and Trasmediterranea.

Tip 4

Consider using different airlines for your arrival and return. Budget airlines have been known to offer amazing deals where you can get a flight to the country at a super-discounted price, on the assumption that you’ll also buy a more expensive, full-priced return ticket with the same airline. If you’re looking at great deals on single tickets, consider buying two tickets with different airlines that are cheaper than staying with the same airline.

Tip 5

Twitter, Twitter, Twitter! Twitter followers are often the first to know about an airline’s new deals or flash sales. Make a Twitter list of the airlines mentioned above so you’re always in the know. It’s not just Twitter though, many airlines share deals on social media in general, so be sure to follow them in advance so you know when a deal is available.

Tip 6

Set alerts. Many airline aggregators, such as Momondo or Kayak, allow users to set alerts for flights. You enter the departure and arrival points, along with your potential travel dates, and set an alert. You’ll receive an email whenever there’s a discount or sale on a flight. The more flexible you are, the better chance you have of getting a discount!
