Moroccan coastal cities

Morocco is not only a country with narrow alleys and desert dune-covered streets, but a 1,200-mile coastline that stretches from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Along the coast, you’ll find charming harbors, bustling fishing ports, beach Moroccan coastal cities

– they’re just as varied as the interior of Morocco. There are many Moroccan coastal cities waiting to be discovered. The majority of them are located off the beaten track.

Apart from Agadir and its resorts, most of Morocco’s coastal cities remain largely unspoiled, ideal for relaxed travelers looking to experience Morocco off the beaten track. Our top Moroccan coastal cities have it all, from stress-free medinas to incredible mountain backdrops. Pick and choose, and spend your Moroccan getaway taking it easy by strolling along the beach.

Essaouira Moroccan coastal cities

One of Morocco’s most popular domestic destinations, Essaouira is the epitome of laid-back Morocco. The small medina is filled with art shops and souvenir stalls (without the hustle and bustle of larger cities), while the bustling fishing port ensures fresh fish daily. Relaxation is the name of the game here, and the long, windy beach is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and beach bums alike. Essaouira is easily reached by bus from Marrakech (approximately 3 hours drive) or by private transfer.

Mirleft is one of the best destinations for a beach holiday in Morocco.

When it comes to charming coastal towns, Mirleft in the south of Morocco is probably the country’s best-kept secret. With not a tourist in sight, Mirleft’s coastline is wild and its beaches deserted. The village itself is very traditional and well worth a visit. However, the center is quite spread out and away from the sea (where you’ll find most of your accommodation), so a car will be useful. It’s a popular Moroccan destination, though, so avoid national holidays and you’ll have the sandy beaches to yourself. Mirleft is only a 2.5-hour drive from Agadir and is a great base from which to explore towns such as Sidi Ifni and Tafraoute.

Oualidia is among the best beach destinations in Morocco

If you are looking for calmer waters, then the small town of Oualidia is the next best beach destination. Oualidia lies on the inland side of a lagoon fed by the Atlantic Ocean. It has sandy coves and waters perfect for kayaking and fishing. It is also the ideal place for foodies to discover the country’s freshest seafood, including lobster, crab, and red mullet, and is known as the oyster capital of Morocco. The best thing about it? Between October and June, you’ll have it pretty much to yourself. (French and Moroccan tourists swarm in during the peak summer season to enjoy this peaceful oasis). Just 2.5 hours’ drive from both Marrakech and Casablanca, Oualidia is perfectly situated.

Al-Hoceima Moroccan coastal cities:

Who says the choice has to be between the mountains and the beach? Al Hoceima has the best of both worlds, with the lush Rif mountains providing the majestic background to its secluded sandy bays. In Al Hoceima, you can plunge into the clear waters of the city beach (Quemado Beach) or head out of town to Asfiha Beach for a more tranquil stretch of sand. As the sun sets, take a pleasant walk along Avenue Mohammed V and cool down on the sea breeze. Hike up the hills for spectacular views of Morocco’s coastline when you need a break from relaxing. Al Hoceima is easily accessible from Tetouan or Chefchaouen by a recently built coastal road. There is also a ferry service from Almería in Spain.

best beach destination: Sidi Kaouki

Just 17 miles south of Essaouira, with a handful of cafes, several family-run guesthouses, and an endless stretch of sandy coastline, Sidi Kaouki is one of Morocco’s most family-friendly beach towns. You’ll find some interesting rock pools to the north at outgoing tides. Sandy beaches extend to the horizon to the south. You’ll easily find your own secluded dune within a 10-minute stroll out to sea. The summer months are the windiest, as they are in Essaouira. You can spend your mornings on the beach and your afternoons by the swimming pool.

Saidia is one of the  best beach destinations in Morocco

If you’re looking for a coastal getaway that’s off the beaten track but still has stunning beaches and the perfect Mediterranean climate, Saidia is for you. Situated on the Algerian-Moroccan border and the Mediterranean Sea, with 14 kilometers of unspoiled coastline and a natural bird sanctuary, this small town is a great place to visit.
